    by Finlay MacNeill

Air a sheinn le Fionnlagh MacNèill
    Donizetti’s L’Elisir D’Amore (Una Furtiva Lacrima)
Dh’èirich na deòir gu mall ‘na sùil
Fianais dha h-aindeoin bho mo rùn.
    A robh i ‘caoineadh gaol na h-òig’ –
Gaol a bhitheadh a chaoidh ga dìth.
    Cuime a shirinn-s’ a’ chòrr –
    Càite faicear samhla dhan òigh.
    M’ ulaidh, ‘s e ‘n gaol a th’ ann
Tha fios, tha fios gur h-e.
    Dhùraiginn buille bhlàth a cridh’
Tacan rim thaobh a bhith sìnt’.
    Dhùraiginn osna chiùin a clèibh
a mhùthchadh an dùrachd mo chrè.
    Nam fairichinn-sa plosgartaich a cridh’
gun ìocainn-sa gach osann le a cèil’
M’ eudail ged gheibhinn am bàs, sona bhithinn gu sìorraidh bràth,
M’ eudail ged gheibhinn am bàs, sona bhithinn gu sìorraidh bràth.

THE TEARS ROSE SOFTLY IN HER EYES
    by Finlay MacNeill

The tears rose softly in her eyes
A reluctant sign from my beloved
Was she lamenting the love of her youth
A love that would forever elude her
Why should I ask for anything more
Where can one see the like of this maiden
    My darling, this is love
    It must surely be love.
My desire is to hear the gentle beat of her heart
As she lies, however fleetingly, by my side
I should like to savour her fragrant breath
    Against my chest
If I could only hear that placid heartbeat
I’d reward each contented sigh with another
My dearest, although I were to die, I’d be happy for all eternity.
